Prabhupāda: Vaiṣṇava ācāra. (break) . . . how nice. This kind of building cannot be constructed. It will require crores of money. Yes. (break)

Indian: . . . nobody. Only during the rain . . . (indistinct) . . . somebody would come here, they would stay here for a few, couple of hours, and then go back.

Prabhupāda: The tank is not with water.

Indian: Yes, they used to have water at both sides of the inside. Now, probably, they are short of water or they have switched on to agriculture . . . (indistinct) . . . so many they used to have flowers and tulasī and all that. Now they have come to agriculture—wheat, barley.

Prabhupāda: Money. Such a nice tank is vacant.

Indian: I remember my young days. People, young boys, they used to come swim here.

Prabhupāda: Oh. (break) Just see. So you may pay them, say, 150, 200 rupees each. Then it will be all maintained, and that much money you can spend.

Indian: And if it's nicely maintained, possibly you can get some return out of it.

Prabhupāda: Yes. That way we shall get fruits and flowers.

Jayādvaita: I was seeing yesterday in Rādhā-Dāmodara Mandira that nothing is nicely maintained except for your rooms.

Prabhupāda: (chuckles) Pehle Rādhā Dāmodara temple me rehte the. (I was staying initially at the Radha Damodar temple.)

Indian: Mere pitaji yahan par principal the, retire hue the. (My father was a principal here and he retired at the same place.)

Prabhupāda: Oh.

Indian: Abhi Kanpur University me deputy reigistrar . . . unke saath apke darshan hue the, 2-3 baar gaye the Radha Damodar mandir. (Now he is in Kanpur as a deputy registrar . . . He had your darshan, went 2 to 3 times to the Radha Damodar temple.)

Prabhupada: Accha. Aap kya kaam karte hain? (Okay. What work do you do?)

Indian: Mai yahan par distributor hun. . . (I am a distributor here. . .) oldest place in Vṛndāvana. I am not even aspirant of religion or psychology, but I am told people are very much interested in Hinduism there. (break)

Prabhupāda: Jaya. Tabiyat theek hai apka? (Is your health okay?) Hare Krsna.

Gurudāsa: . . . should have a nice path all the way around.

Prabhupāda: Yes. Sabhji idhar hi paida hue? To isko kya karte hain aap log?Do these vegetables grow here? What do you do with these?)

Indian: Ye sabji . . . (These vegetables. . .)

Prabhupāda: Yes. Bhagvan ke mandir me. Besan? (In Lord's temple. Gram flour?)

Indian: Bechte hain . . . (We sell it . . .)

Prabhupāda: Yes. To humlog ko dijiye na humlog le lenge. Jitna sabzi ap dijiyega humlog le lenge hamare wo Balram mandir me . . . dijiye aur jo daam aye le lijiye. (So you can give it to us, we will take it. How much vegetables you give us we will take it in our Balarama temple . . . give us and whatever is the price you can take it.)

Indian: Raman Reti.

Prabhupāda: Raman Reti. Aur nahi to hamara aadmi aakarke le jayega. (Or else our people can come and collect it.)

Indian:Han koi aadmi bhej do to . . . ( Yes, if you could send some people . . .)

Prabhupāda: Han, kya daam hai? Kitna? (Yes, what is the price? How much?)

Lokanātha: Abhi le le Prabhupāda aapke liye? (Shall we buy for you now Prabhupāda?) We can buy some. We should buy some for you, Prabhupāda?

Prabhupāda: No, we can buy the whole thing.

Indian: Iska kitna hai sab ka? (How much is the cost of all this?)

Seller: Paanch rupaya paanch kilo. (5 rupees, 5 kilos.)

Lokanātha: Paanch kilo? (5 kilos?)

Prabhupāda: Kitna kilo hai? I'm talking with him. Kitna kilo hai? Kya cheez hai isme? (You have got the money? How many kilos is this? What is there in this?)

Seller: Ya me sab yahi hai. (Only these items are there.)

Prabhupāda: Yehi hai, oh eki kism. Bhaut paida hota hai yahan? Paanch kilo ka daam kitna? Paanch rupaya. Ye kitna hai? (to devotees) (Oh, the same variety, this grows a lot here? What is the cost for 5 kilos? 5 rupees. What is the weight of this?)

Jayatīrtha: Yes.

Prabhupāda: Usko idhar de do, wo jo hai na loha idhar de do. Aur kuch sabzi nahi hota hai? (Give it here, the iron weight, give it here. No other vegetables grow here?)

Seller: Aur koi sabzi no hovo Māhārāj ji. (No other vegetables grow here Māhārāj ji.)

Jayatīrtha: Ye kya hai? Accha. (What is this? Okay.)

Prabhupada: Kahan le jayega? (Where will you take it?)

Seller: Delhi.

Prabhupada: Delhi? (. . . break . . .) Kya daam hai? (What is the price?)

Seller: Apki marzi, hum to ek kilo bhejen hain Māhārāj. (Your wish Māhārāj, we have given 1 kilo.)

Prabhupada: Accha bara ana denge. Han, nahi?. Ladki badi hoshiyar hai. (Okay, we will give 12 ana. Yes or No? The girl is very clever.) (all laughing) Bolo kitna de. (Tell us how much we should give.)

Seller: Apki marzi Māhārāj. (Your wish Māhārāj.)

Prabhupada: Ab to marzi humari razi nahi hai tumhari beti ko. Tumhara ladki to razi nahi hai. (Your daughter is not okay with my wish. Your girl is not ready.) (laughter) (to Jayatīrtha) So give him two rupees, eight annas. Hai tumhare pas guthiyaan? To, hum log roz ayenge le jane. (Do you have the coins? So, we will come daily to take.) So give him . . .

Gurudāsa: Bargain.

Prabhupāda: My father used to do that. He'd go to a vegetable vendor. He has got a big basket, and he'll say, "What do you want for all, the whole basket." So he is ready, because he'll sit down so long, so at very cheap rate he'll give it. And it was not required in the family so much. My mother became very angry, that "You are bringing so many, so much vegetable, it is being spoiled." But he would purchase like that. If you give him in those days fifty rupees to go to the market, he will spend all the money and bring at home. Hare Kṛṣṇa. Aaplog sab kidhar rehte hain? (Where do you all stay?)

Indian: Vṛndāvana me hi rehte hain. Yahan ghoomne aata hai, farm me reh kar jata hai. (We stay in Vṛndāvana. We come here to roam, stay in farms and go back.)

Prabhupada: Accha bageecha hai. (It is a nice garden)

Indian: Is samaya ujad gaya hai Prabhuji. (Now it has been destroyed Prabhuji.)

Prabhupada: Isko maintain theek nahi kiya hai. (It has not been well maintained.)

Indian: Maintain thik nahi hai jis samay unke malik the, ab to trust bana hua hai. Government paisa bahut seemit deta hai, trust ko koi interest nahi hai. (It is not maintained well when the owner was there, now a trust has been formed. The Government supplies limited funds, and the trust does not have any interest.)

Prabhupada: Isme to kum-se-kum bees maali chahiye. (For this, it requires at least 20 gardeners.)

Indian: Aur ye inko charon ko theka hai, inko naukari bhi nahi padta hai. Aur ye hai maali, inka naukari bhi nahi padta hai, inka bal-bachha itna laga rehta hai. (And these four have the contract , they don't have a proper job. And he is the gardener, no proper job, his children are also working so hard.)

Prabhupada: Isko maintain karna chahiye. (They should maintain it.)

Indian: Ek idhar paani khaara ho gaya hai. Paani ka sabse bada problem hai idhar. (Here the water has become hard. There is a very big problem with water here.)

Prabhupada: Khaara paani me to kuch hota nahi. (Nothing happens when the water is hard.)

Indian: Khaara paani me hota nahi lekin khar ho gaya hai zameen mein. Isse 20 saal pehle yahan ka bada accha pani ka sadhan tha, maali vagera bhi the aur kafi phulwari vagera thi. Ab to ye sab bahut ujad ho gaya hai. Nimbu, apke amarood, ye kai tarah ke phal bhi aate hain. Par is samay amarood khatam ho chuka hai. (Nothing happens with hard water but the ground has become very hard. 20 years ago, there was a very good water source, there were many gardeners, and many flowers as well. But now it has become very dry. Lemon, guava, and many other varieties of fruits and flowers also grow. But now the guavas are over.)

Prabhupada: To paani kuan se khaara hi nikalta hai? (So, the water from well comes out hard?)

Indian: Khaara hi nikalta hai. Aur wo bhi pura kharcha karte nahin hain ye. Kua hai motor lagi hui hai uska pura intezam wo nahi karte hain. Isse accha intezaam to Bihariji ka bageecha hai. Usme accha hai. Unhone acchi tarah usko bana rakha hai. Aur usme jaise uska paidawar bhi wo le lete hain aur phulwari vagera bhi acchi hai udhar. ( Yes it comes hard. And also they don't spend the entire thing. Well is there, the pump is attached, they do not properly utilize it. Better than this is the garden of Bihariji. It is nice there. He has managed it very well. And he takes the produce from the garden and the flower garden is also nice there.)

Prabhupada: Humlog ke haath me de to humlog mandir le jake usko . . . (If you hand it over to us then we will take it to temple and . . . )

Indian: Isme to trust bana hua hai. Government ne to apne under care me kar liya. (But there is a trust made for this. Government has taken it under it's care control.)

Indian (2): Ek bageecha banwana chahiye, Swamiji, apko idhar. (You should make a garden here, Swamiji.)

Prabhupada: Hum banane ko razi hain, aap log kara dijiye . . . (We are ready, you make it.)

Indian: Aur bhi jagah kahi hai. (There are other plantations also.)

Prabhupada: Kahan? (Where?)

Indian: Apke ashram ke as pas. (Nearby your ashram.)

Prabhupada: Aisa bageecha nahi hai, ye bada sundar hai. (This kind of garden is not there, this is very beautiful.) Hare Kṛṣṇa. We are prepared to spend. (break) . . . saintly person . . .

Vrajavāsī: Haribol!

Prabhupāda: Haribol. Jaya-ho! Hare Kṛṣṇa.

Vrajavāsī: Jaya Rādhārāṇī ki!

Prabhupāda: Hare Kṛṣṇa. Aur aap idhar rehte hai kya? (Do you live here?)

Vrajavāsī: Ji. (Yes.)

Prabhupāda:Accha, bhajan karte hain? ( Okay, you do bhajan?)

Vrajavāsī: Rādhārāṇī ki Jaya!

Prabhupāda: Haribol. Hare Kṛṣṇa.

Vrajavāsī: Haribol. Haribol. Haribol.

Prabhupāda: To utsav hai, aplog ko nimantran hai. (There is a festival, you are all invited.) Oh, when our festival?

Gurudāsa: Sixth, seventh and eighth. Tomorrow, next day and the Rāma-navamī.

Prabhupada: Teen roj hai, aaplog sab mitr ke saath aaiye, aap bhi aaiye Mahārāja. (The festival is for three days, you all come with your friends, you also come Mahārāja.) (break)

Pañcadraviḍa: In the Bhāgavatam it says that if a person cannot offer a straw mat like that to a saintly person when he visits, he doesn't live in a house . . .

Prabhupāda: But if he hasn't got extra straw, how can he do?

Pañcadraviḍa: He may offer obeisances. If he can't do that, simply cry.

Prabhupāda: Straw? Straw is offered. (walking through a field) Oh, not taken care of.

Pañcadraviḍa: You said if he couldn't . . . if he cannot do that, he does not live in a house, but he lives in a tree full of snakes.

Prabhupāda: Yes. So he has offered seat.

Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: Śrīla Prabhupāda? In the Bhāgavatam it says that although Lord Viṣṇu is the controller of everything, He is particularly in charge with the mode of goodness, and He is associated with maintenance. So is it that in order to maintain something in this material world also, there has to be the touch of the mode of goodness?

Prabhupāda: Yes.

tadā rajas-tamo-bhāvāḥ
kāma-lobhādayaś ca ye
ceta etair anāviddhaṁ
sthitaṁ sattve prasīdati
(SB 1.2.19)

When the heart is cleansed of the dirty things, rajas-tamo-bhāvāḥ, the modes of rajaḥ and tamaḥ, ignorance and passion, then he is situated in the sattva-guṇa. There are three guṇas. If you become released from the tamo-guṇa and rajo-guṇa, naturally you are situated in the sattva-guṇa. Sthito sattve prasīdati. Tadā rajas-tamo-bhāvāḥ kāma-lobhādayaś ca ye, ceta etair anāviddham. When the heart is not attacked by this rajo-guṇa and tamo-guṇa, then it remains fixed up in sattva-guṇa. Then . . .

Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: Evaṁ prasanna-manaso?

Prabhupāda: Evaṁ prasanna-manaso bhagavad-bhakti-yogataḥ (SB 1.2.20). Then he becomes prasanna-manasaḥ, happy mood. Then he can cultivate devotional service. Otherwise not possible. Ceta etair anāviddhaṁ sthito sattve prasīdati. Unless one is situated in sattva-guṇa, there is no possibility of peacefulness. Pehle ye sikhaya jata tha ki bhagvan ki kripa se jo kuch mila hai brahman, kshatriya, vaishya, sudra, isi me santosh hoke bhagwat bhakti karni hai. Aaj kal ho gaya, lao paisa. Paisa mile to ek motor kharido, aur fir mile to char motor kharido aur ek aurat ke liye, ek ladka ke liye bas dikhao aur ek din maut ata hai laat mar karke le jata hai, sab pada rehta hai. (In the old days, it was taught that by God's mercy whatever we have got, brahmin, kshatriya, vaishya, sudra, we should become happy with that and do service to the Lord. Nowadays it has become, 'Get money.'. If you get money then buy a car, and if you get more money then buy 4 cars and show off to a lady or to a boy. One day death comes and kicks you out and takes away everything, everything is left behind.)

Indian: Pehle santosh tha. Ye hi samajhte the jo kuch ishwar ne diya hai humko bahut diya hai, isi ke hum kabil tha. (In those days there was satisfaction. This was the understanding that whatever God has given us, it is more than what we asked for and we are qualified only for this much.)

Prabhupāda: Jo bhagvan se sampark kis tarah se banaye . . . ye hamara vedic civilization hai. Ab wo sab to chod-chad diya kewal indriya tripti, sharab piyo, mans khao, randibaji karo. (How to form a relationship with God . . . this is our vedic civilization. Now they have left all that and runing after sense gratification, drinking alcohol, eat meat, and do promiscuity.) Ekdam nash kar diya. (They have destroyed it totally.)

Indian: Par swamiji iske baavzood bhi abhi zyada tarah sankhya acche logon ki hai par wo kya hai dabi hui hai, wo isme vishwas nahi karte hain. (But Swamiji, in spite of this, now most of the population are good people but they are suppressed, they don't believe in this.)

Prabhupāda: Koi cheez dabi nahi reh sakti hai. Bhagavad bhakti 'ahaituky apratihata" usko koi daba nahi sakta. Iccha nahi hai. Jiska iccha hai usko koi daba nahi sakta hai. Iccha hi hai wo sab nasht ho gaya hai. Aur usi ko humlog thoda jagane ka koshish kar rahe hain Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Abhi dekhiye Tirupati, Tirumala ka bahut income hai, usme sab industry lagate hain. Wahan jo baal katta hai na usko bhi bechta hai. Bech karke paisa ekathha karke sabhi electronic . . . bhagavad bhakti prachar karna chahiye, na electronic. (Nothing can stay suppressed. Devotional service "ahaituky aprtihata" no one can suppress it. They have no desire. Those who have desires, no one can suppress them. Desires should be there, but it is all destroyed. And we are trying to awaken that dormant love for God, Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Now you see, in Tirupati, Tirumala they have lot of income, everyone is putting industries there. Even the hair which is cut there, they sell it. They sell and collect the money and use it for electronics . . . that money should be used for preaching love of Godhead, not on electronics.)

Indian: Idhar bhi yehi prayas ho raha hai. Is samaya yahan ka Governor jo Gopal Reddy hain, is mandiron ka jo bhi hai isko sab badlna chah rahe hain. Bar-bar wo aa rahe hain aur isi tarah ka koi kanoon la rahe hain, isi session me aa raha hai. Wo bhi ab aisa kar rahe hain ki Tirupati Bālāji mandir jaisa yahan ka sab gathan ho jaye aur wo paise ko hum is tarah lagaye. Theek hai inka vichar accha ho sakta hai par . . . (Here also the same effort is going on. The present Governor here, Gopal Reddy (Chenna Reddy) wants to bring about changes to all the temples. Every now and then he keeps coming and bringing out new laws like these, they are coming out in this session. He is doing it in the same way, as Tirupati Bālāji temple everything should be formed here, and we must utilize the money in this way. It's alright, his ideas might be good but . . .)

Prabhupāda: Vichar is liye theek hai wo dekhte hai jo mandir me sab mahant log wohii kaam karte hain, mandir me jis mahant ke pas paisa hai wohi sharab, randi me lagate hain, sab nahi to kuch. To isse accha kuch industry me lage, ye Government ka prayas hai. Abhi ye sab bade-bade mahant . . . ye bhautik maya zabardast hai to wo unko pakad leta hai. (The idea is good because he sees that in temples the priests do the same sinful acts. Those who have money they indulge in intoxication, prostitutes — if not everyone at least some of them. So, better than this is to invest in industries, this is what the Government is attempting for. Now all these big big priests . . . this material illusion is very strong and it catches them.) (end)
