(walk in Ranga Gardens)

Prabhupāda: . . . Asan hota hai? (Does Yoga happen?)

Indian (1): Han asan hota hai. (Yes yoga is being done.)

Prabhupāda: . . . Aur upar mein? (And on top?)

Indian (1): Upar mein rahane ka hai. Pehle ye kiraye pe rahate they . . . (The top is for residence. Earlier he used to stay for rent . . .)

Indian (2): Woh jo Mahārāj ji jo the, Mahārāj, wo rahte they pehle. (That Mahārāja who was there, he used to stay here previously.)

Prabhupada: Kaun maharaj? (Which Mahārāja?)

Indian (2): Ye kya naam tha unka? Jagad-guru jinne ashram bana liya. (What was his name? Jagad-guru or something. He has made his asrama now.)

Prabhupada: Jagad-guru.

Indian (1): Ye inne ashram jo bana liya tha na. Ye hai. (The one who made his asrama now. He is.)

Indian (2): Pritam Pradayake Maharaj ji. (Pritam Pradayake Mahārāja ji.)

Prabhupada: Okay.

Indian (1): Woh kiraye pe rahte they, ab khali hai paani ka taklif hai nahi kiraye pe toh uth jaye. (He used to stay on rent. There is a problem of water supply, otherwise it will go on rent.)

Prabhupada: Kitna kiraya hai? (What is the rent?)

Indian (1): 30 rupai! Bhaiya maharaj ji. (Thirty rupees a month Mahārāja.)

Indian (2): 30 rupai. (Thirty rupees a month.) (laughs)

Prabhupada: Hun! Paani ka taklif hai? (Oh! There is problem of water supply?)

Indian (2): Paani door se lana pade, kuaan toh hai . . . paani nek dur se lana pade . . . kuan darbaje ke pas hai. (Water has to be brought from far, wells are there . . . but it has to be brought from a little distance. The well is near the gate. (of the temple).

Prabhupada: Toh hum log le sakte hain? (So, we can take it.) (on rent).

Indian (2): Jaroor Maharaj . . . kyon nai? (Surely Mahārāja . . . why not?)

Prabhupada: Toh bandovast kar dijiye naa. (So kindly make arrangements for that.)

Indian (1): Accha. (Okay.)

Indian (2): Ho jayega. (It will be done.)

(break) . . . dozen carts.

Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: It looks like it came from here. (break)

Prabhupāda: . . . cannot say Hare Kṛṣṇa. There is such competition.

Indian (1): Maharaj ji keh rahe hain ki woh jo piche ka jo hai usko kiraye pe hame dilwa dijiye aur isko bagiche ko hum thik kar denge. (Mahārāja is saying that the room at the back be made available to rent for them. And we will make this garden alright.)

Indian (3): Manger se baat karte hain. (I will talk to the Manager.)

Prabhupada: Haan. (Okay.)

Indian (1): Bagiche ko thik karne ke lai Babulal se kahaiye. (Tell Babulal to make the garden alright.) . . . (indistinct)

Indian (3): Toh kiraye ko kaise kya? (So about rent, what?)

Indian (1): Khali woh portion kiraye ko . . . (Only that portion for rent . . .)

Indian (3): Kaunsa? (Which one?)

Indian (1): Woh piche wala rehne ka, jisme woh rahte hain Raghunath Acharya. (That backside residence, where Raghunath Acarya stays.)

Indian (3): Raghunath Acharya rehte hain. Accha. Toh aap kahe ke liye le rahe hain usko? (Raghunath Acharya lives there. Okay. So why are you taking it on rent?)

Prabhupada: Hamara pas admi bahut hai, udhar sankulan nahi hota hai. (We have so many people. There is so much congestion there.)

Indian (3): Accha. (Okay.)

Prabhupada: Kabhi-kabhi woh samajh lijiye Fogla Ashram mein, idhar-udhar sab rahtein hain. (Sometimes they stay here and there, Fogla asrama, here and there.)

Indian (3): Isliye? (That's why?)

Prabhupada: Haan. Isliye . . . (Yes, that's why . . .) I like this garden very nice.

Indian (3): Han garden ka to hai. (Yeah that garden is nice.)

Indian men: . . . (indistinct) . . .Usme toh hamare aadmi rahenge. (In there, our people will also stay.)

Prabhupada: Nahi main khud bhi reh sakta hun. (No, I can also stay.)

Indian (3): Okay. Aaj manager se baat kar lenge hum. (Okay. We will talk to the manager today.)

Prabhupada: Kar lijiye. (Do that.). It is maintained very nicely. We can get flowers. Woh flower udhar Bhagvan Krishna-Balrama idhar Ranganath ji sabko lag sakte hain. (These flowers, there for Kṛṣṇa Balarama and here for Ranganathji—they can be used for all of them.)

Indian: oh yes! Very beautiful flowers . . . (indistinct)

Prabhupada: Water supply is there? Kuan hai kya? Kuan hai idhar?) (Is there a well? Is there a well here?)

Indian man: Kuan hai. Motor lag rahi hai. Do kuan hain. (A well is there. We are placing a motor. There are two wells.) Udhar kheti hota hai. Ek kuccha bagicha hai or ek pakka hai, ye pakka basta hai, woh kucche ke naam se prasiddh hai useme kheti hoti hai. (Farming is done there. There is one raw garden and another is solid one. Here is a raw garden and there it is famous as "kuccha" garden, farming is done here.)

Indian: Do bagiche hai ek ye ek iske paas hai. (Two gardens are there, one is this and the other is near this.) . . . (indistinct) . . .

Prabhupāda: Paani toh idhar mitha hi hoga. (So the water must be sweet here.)

Indian: Han bahut badhiya, meetha . . . (Yes very nice, sweet.)

Indian: Meetha, bahut badiya toh nahi hai, pahle bahut badiya tha lekin ab kuch khali ho gaya hai. (It is not very sweet now, earlier it was very good but now it has become a little empty.)

Indian man: 400 aadmi hai? Accha! (400 men? Okay!)

Prabhupada: Isiliye sankulan nahi hota hai. (That's why it is not enough.)

Indian man: Haan toh woh set toh karna hi padega. (Yes, we have to set it.)

Prabhupada: Aur zameen hum log le rahe hain makaan banana ke liye, to abhi hai nahi, abhi bada gunjaish nahi hai. (Hmm. We are buying land to make homes but it is not there now. There is no scope now.)

Indian man: Accha. (Okay.)

Prabhupada: These people, they like Vṛndāvana.

Indian man: In logon ko Vrindavan bhaut pasand hai. (These people like Vṛndāvana a lot.)

Indian man: Accha. (Okay.)

Prabhupada: Bada pasand hai, toh isliye hum chahte hain ki sab . . .(Yes, they like it so much, that's why I want everybody. . .)

Indian man: Vrindavana toh dham hi aisa hai kisko pasand na ho. (Vṛndāvana is such a holy place, who will not like it?)

Prabhupada: Yes.

Indian man: Ye toh cheej hi aisi hai na. (It is such a place.)

Prabhuapda: Ramya kacid upasana. Vṛndāvana dhama.

Indian man: Toh aap to 11 taarik ko padhaar rahe hain na America. (You are reaching America on the 11th right.)

Prabhupada: Haan. (Yes.)

Indian man: Toh 4 din mein to nischai karna bada hi muskil hoga. (It will be difficult to finalize in 4 days.)

Prabhupada: Nahi. Agar aap log nischay kar do toh humara admi toh rahega woh sab karega. (No. If you confirm our men will be staying here, they will do everything.)

Indian man: Apko telephone number kya hai? (What is our telephone number?)

Prabhupada: What is our telephone number?

Akṣayānanda: 179.

Indian man: 179.

Devotees: 8.

Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: Vṛndāvana 178.

Indian man: 178. Kyunki aisa hai manager trustee ko likhaye, trust ke andar hai na. (Because it's like the manager will write to the trustees, it is under a trust.)

Prabhupada: Haan. Ek trustee toh humse bhaut pehchan hai. Woh Mr. S.K. Somani. (Yes. One trustee is well known to us, Mr. S.K. Somani.)

Indian man: Somani sahab jo Gajadhar ji they unka toh dehant toh ho hi gaya tha. (Mr.Somani, Gajadharji is dead now.)

Prabhupada: Haan. (Yes.)

Indian man: Woh toh hai nahi ab. Nahi unke bhai hai, toh bhai jo hai so Vamsidhar ji hai aur ek unke jo unke chacha ke ladka hai bhai. (He is no longer alive. No, his brother is there, Vamsidharaji is there and one uncle's son.)

Prabhupada: They are not trustees.

Indian man: Gajadhar toh unka toh dehant ho gaya. (Gajadhar is dead now.)

Prabhupada: Unse hamara koi Parichay nahi hai. (We don't have any connection with him.)

Indian man: Gajadhar ji toh bada hi achhe admi they unne toh Rangji mandir ko bada bhari. (Gajadhar ji was a very nice man, he supported Rangji temple heavily.) . . . (. . . indistinct . . .)

Prabhupāda: So they are not trustee . . . are agreeable. Whatever you think, as you like, we can agree . . . (break)

Indian man: Main baat kar lunga unse. (I will talk to them.) (break)

Indian man: Je hai donation bhakta log matlab lete hain. (This is a donation, meaning devotees will collect.)

Prabhupada: Monthly kuch donation hai. (Some monthly donation is there.)

Indian man: Monthly donation hai. Waise kuch building hai jo rented hai udhar. (Monthly donation is there. There are some buildings here that are rented.)

Prabhupada: Aajkal toh rent mein kuch milta hi nahi hai. (Nowadays you don't get anything on rent.)

Indian man: Ab ye hai purani hai . . . (Now this is an old one . . .)

Prabhupada: Purani hai. Mandir toh bhaut sundar hai. (Old one. The temple is very beautiful.)

Indian man: Aap navmi ke din bata rahe ho matlab kya . . . yagya hoga us din. (You were telling us that on Navami day there will be some fire sacrifice.)

Prabhupada: Haan? (What?)

Indian man: Navmi ke din kabi dopahar mein. (On Bavami day, in the afternoon.)

Prabhupada: Navmi toh kal hai. (Navami is tomorrow.)

Indian man: Parsaun hai matlab ke. (Day after tomorrow.)

Prabhupada: Accha. (Okay.)

(break)

Indian man: Parsaun (indistinct) . . . toh abhi aap jaisa batyein apna . . . kabhi dopahar mein . . . (Day after tomorrow . . . (indistinct) . . . so as you told now . . . in the afternoon sometime.)

Tripurāri: (laughter) I can remember from Caitanya-caritāmṛta, one devotee of Lord Rāmacandra was always chanting the name of Rāma, but Lord Caitanya convinced him to chant Hare Kṛṣṇa.

Prabhupāda: (laughs) There is competition like that. One will say: "Hare Rāma." Another will say: "No, Hare Kṛṣṇa."

Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: He was very obstinate.

Hari-śauri: Or that man in Delhi.

Prabhupāda: Huh?

Hari-śauri: That man in Delhi thought we had something against Lord Rāmacandra.

Prabhupāda: (laughs) There are many versions like that. Somebody will say: "Your Rāmacandra may be very important person, but when Rādhārāṇī goes to Kṛṣṇa, Lord Rāmacandra becomes His (Her) guard with arrows." (laughter) When Rādhārāṇī goes to Kṛṣṇa, and Rāmacandra has to serve Rādhārāṇī with arrows and bows.

(pause)

Prabhupāda: This is gorur. Garuda.

Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: Śrīla Prabhupāda?

Prabhupāda: Hmm.

Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: What is that six-pointed star significance?

Prabhupāda: Cakra.

Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: Oh.

Hari-śauri: What is the symbol on the right-hand side, Śrīla Prabhupāda?

Prabhupāda: I think śaṅkha.

Hari-śauri: Is that the conch, is it? (break)

Akṣayānanda: . . . thread from the Deity, the old sacred thread, and they tie it on their wrist. They tie it here.

Prabhupāda: Who?

Akṣayānanda: Some of the devotees have started to do that now.

Prabhupāda: Why?

Akṣayānanda: I don't know. It's just like wearing beads. The sacred thread from the Deity, after replacing, they take the old one and they wear it here.

Prabhupāda: Who has told them?

Akṣayānanda: I don't know.

Prabhupāda: Then why you . . .?

Akṣayānanda: Well, I told one boy to stop it, and because I couldn't quote any authority, he keeps wearing . . .

Prabhupāda: No, no, there is no author . . . where is his authority?

Akṣayānanda: Yes.

Prabhupāda: This nonsense should be stopped.

Akṣayānanda: Yes, I thought it was wrong. That's why I mentioned it. I wanted to make sure.

Prabhupāda: Stop this.

Akṣayānanda: Okay. Sure.

Hari-śauri: I think their idea is that because it's prasādam, it's from the Deity, that they're able to wear it like that.

Prabhupāda: That is another concoction. The sacred thread is not used like that, in our hand.

Akṣayānanda: I thought it was wrong. It seems like some kind of fashion or something, concocted fashion. (break)

Hari-śauri: . . . small black beads that the devotees are wearing from Rādhā-kuṇḍa. They have a string of beads made of clay from Rādhā-kuṇḍa. Are they . . .?

Prabhupāda: Rādhā-kuṇḍa clay is not bad.

Hari-śauri: So it's all right to wear them?

Prabhupāda: Not very constantly.

Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: Sometimes I think, Śrīla Prabhupāda, that you're worried that one thing will lead to the next. Actually, all we have to do is follow your example.

Akṣayānanda: Yes, we don't have to add anything. What can we add?

Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: What is the use of it?

Akṣayānanda: What can we add?

Prabhupāda: There is a proverb in Bengali that the crows, they eat stool. But when the crow is very young, he eats more stool. (laughter) (break) . . . tendency always, how to become hippie as soon as there is little opportunity.

Akṣayānanda: Yes, it's something we have to guard against very carefully.

Prabhupāda: Don't allow them. Don't allow all these.

Akṣayānanda: Even in India people say like that, "Oh, you are hippies?"

Prabhupāda: As soon as you become hippie, immediately your all prestige will go.

Akṣayānanda: Finished, yes.

Prabhupāda: Very carefully.

Hari-śauri: The thing is, a lot of the devotees, they're not very much conscious that they're being watched by the . . . very carefully by the public. (break)

Prabhupāda: (bird is singing nearby) Bird of paradise? No.

Hari-śauri: No, the bird of paradise is different.

Prabhupāda: Different. (end)
