Vrndavana,

August 9, 1977

From: Abhirama

Los Angeles

Dear Ramesvara Maharaja,

Please accept my humble obeisances at your feet. Unfortunately due to mismanagement, Srila Prabhupada’s green card and His status as an immigrant to the United States, have expired and cannot be extended. If an application had been made before its expiry, perhaps there would have been a chance to extend it. Needless to say Srila Prabhupada was very discouraged to hear this news, and it was not easy for us to tell Him. However it is definitely a fact as I have it in writing from the Consulate of the United States at New Delhi.

The U.S. Consulate has suggested that if He wants to reestablish His status as an immigrant, He should reapply as a “Minister of Religion, whose presence is required by a religious group within the United States.” Another requirement is that He must establish how He will maintain Himself while within the United States. They have also suggested that since He has previously held a green card, His case should be quite easy. Being expert devotee, you can understand that something like this should be handled as expertly as possible, so that we can quickly rectify this situation. So I am requesting you to see to it that the proper documents are composed, and sent to me immediately at Vrndavana. I would recommend that you consult an attorney who is expert in these matters, so as not to waste time.

Awaiting your early reply, and hoping this meets you in good health.

Your servant,

Abhirama das Adhikari
Asst. Secretary to His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada
His Holiness Ramesvara Swami
c/o ISKCON LA

ADA/ad P.S. If you can consult with the proper authorities at the Immigration office, there may be no need of a lawyer. ARD.
