720713 - Letter to Mahamsa written from Los Angeles

His Divine Grace
A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

July 13, 1972

CENTER: ISKCON London

My dear Mahamsa,

Please accept my blessings. I beg to acknowledge receipt of your letters dated July 4 and July 10, 1972, and enclosed find copies of letters of transfer to Indian Overseas Bank, Juhu Branch, one for Rs. 29,000 to cover the amount to be paid for mortgage, registration, etc., as per your letter of the 4th, and the other for Rs. 70,000 to cover the amount borrowed by you for stamp tax. You can draw that amount of Rs. 70,000 by your own cheque for re-payment of the loan.

Yes, I have no objection if you build a waterproof storage shed for books. But one thing is, you owe the Building Fund a total of Rs. 29,000 and the Book Fund Rs. 70,000, so how you will repay? Are the collections from Life Memberships and books stopped? Life Membership collection in one month is only Rs. 17,773, so that is only one member in two days. And book sales collection is only Rs. 3,839, but Giriraj told me once they are collecting average Rs. 500 daily. If so many books are coming, how you will sell them? Now you cooperatively make program how to increase the sales of books and Life Members, and all of the money from book sales may be used for the building work, as the cost of the books is being paid for from the Mayapur Fund so they will be free to you.

We are glad to send one letter inviting Mr. Trivedi’s son to come to London to live with us after receiving from you further details of name, etc. I notice you say that five devotees are planning to leave Bombay. That is not good. Better if they stay there and work sincerely under any conditions to please Krishna. Bombay is the center for money in India, so I do not know why there should be shortage of money. Simply you have to work for it and use your brain how to do it, that’s all. When I was alone in India I was able to raise funds, translate Srimad Bhagwatam, see to the printing, editing, everything, single-handedly. Now there are so many of you, so if you do things with a cool brain there will be no difficulty and Krishna will give you all intelligence and facility.

Hoping this meets you in good health.

Your ever well-wisher,

A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami

n.b. Kindly send copies of the picture in Times of India from London. P.T.O. further comments by HDG, That 2 lakhs we shall pay before the end of the year to save Rs. 3000/=. Try to save paying the mortgage (see enclosed letter) “Why he has asked for Rs. 29,000? 18,000 and 4000 make Rs. 22,000, why he asks for Rs. 29,000?”
