741220 - Letter to Jayadvaita from Paramahamsa

Bombay,

December 20, 1974

From: Paramahamsa

New York

Dear Jayadvaita Prabhu,

Please accept my most humble obeisances at your feet. I am in due receipt of your letter dated Dec. 16, 1974 and have noted the contents. Regarding Visakha’s article, the picture painted by Jadurani is approved by Srila Prabhupada and so is the chart that you enclosed. Prabhupada said that the chart was alright but you should double check it with Bhagavad-gita, to make sure everything is correct. As far as the three fictitious examples used to exemplify the people in the three different modes of material nature this technique is alright. Prabhupada said that to convince people by practical example, such as this, is a very good idea. But the first thing he mentioned after I began reading about Mr. and Mrs. Bright and their two children, who are suppose to be characters in the mode of goodness, was to be in the mode of goodness means the brahminical character[ist]ics as stated in Bhagavad-gita; samo damas tapah. … etc., and also one in the mode of goodness is following the four regulative principles, no illicit sex, no meat-eating, no intoxication and no gambling. These things you have not stated fully enough. Srila Prabhupada’s basic comment was that the idea of convincing people by these examples is good but you must be sure that the example is directly parallel to the shastras.

Srila Prabhupada has postponed his journey to Honolulu due to pressing matters here in Bombay. But in order to try and help the situation in Honolulu He has sent Brahmananda Swami there. In his absense Srila Prabhupada has requested me to accept secretarial duties. So I hope this letter is satisfactory for your needs.

I hope this meets you in good health.

Yr. servant,

Paramahamsa Swami
Personal Secretary
