Sanskrit Conversion
This page is used to convert the verses in Vanisource to Unicode Devanagari Sanskrit
Introduction
Hare Krsna! This page has been made accessible to any vanisevant with some knowledge of Sanskrit, so we can, in a collaborative manner, convert all the Devanagari Sanskrit found in Srila Prabhupada's books to a format (unicode) that can be viewed properly across most internet browsers and electronic documents (word docs, spreadsheets and emails). The goal is to replicate the exact format found in Srila Prabhupada's books, meaning: the order, numbering and spacing of the verses. This is the reason why the vanisevant (you), must have good understanding of the Sanskrit language, or have 1. a very good eye, 2. good level of intelligence to discern and understand the differences between sanskrit characters, and 3. be very detailed oriented. Minor changes in the spacing between words will change the word completely: drupadaś ca = द्रुपदश् च and drupadaśca = द्रुपदश्च are different, and this will be a very important part of this service. Instructions
In order to convert the Devanagari sanskrit [1] extracted from the Vedabase, this page was designed to present 10 verses at a time in which you will find:
- Original Devanagari Sanskrit (red color) that we will use as a reference in order to know if the new Sanskrit we are building is accurate and formated properly.
- New Devanagari Sanskrit (blue color) we are building. You must click "Get Devanagari" first to retrieve it. It is populated based on the "Romanized Sanskrit" field and is updated everytime you make any changes to it. This is the most important field because this is the final text that will be imported into the Vanisource books (Bhagavad-gita, Srimad-Bhagavatam, Caitanya Caritamrita, etc). This field is editable by clicking over it, but we encourage you to do editions only on the Romanized sanskrit field (unless you really know what you are doing).
- Romanized sanskrit, also known as IAST or Unicode, found in Srila Prabhupada's books (e.g.: Śrī Kṛṣṇa). This is a very important piece of info because this text will help us correct any inconsistencies we might find in the Devanagari Sanskrit we are building with this tool. Simply click to edit. Every time you edit, once you click outside the edit box, it will update the New Devanagari Sanskrit (blue color). This is the field you must edit in order to make the New Devanagari look exactly as the original (red color) one. Most of the editions (if not all) are based on spacing that needs to be corrected (deleting or inserting a space between words).
- The buttons at the bottom are self-explanatory. The first one converts the Romanaized sanskrit (black roman letters paragraph) to Devanagari, the second is used once you have finished correcting the Devanagari in order to fix the numbers by inserting the numerals that belong to this verse (copying the from the original devanagari). After that it should look identical: Same number of lines, same amount of sanskrit devanagari words and most importantly identical sanskrit. The last button is the Save button that you should use only after you have finish converting the verse.
(**If the Original Sanskrit (red) does not display properly(strange code) it means you need to install the Indevr fonts in your computer)
Remember if you already have Vedabase installed in your computer simply go to your browser preferences and change the default font to Indevr. (In reality it should display automatically, but maybe your browser is set to not allow page suggested fonts. If you are using Internet Explorer and have problems with the conversion tool, remember we recommend to use Mozilla Firefox [2] In order to install the necesary fonts to use this tool you need to first download them here. Then follow this [3] guide depending on your system.
